What is RSS?
The menu on the right hand side opens RSS Feeds on this page which have been converted to HTML from RSS XML format using ASP script. The original feed can be viewed by clicking the RSS icon when it loads.
About RSS Feeds
When you see this icon
at the top of your browser it means there is alternative RSS Feed content available to view.
RSS means "Realy Simple Syndication" which is an XML format originally created to syndicate news stories for sharing on the web. It is now used as the standard format for all kinds of Blogs.
But as most things do on the internet, the "Really Simple" part of RSS can get more complicated with the introduction of "XLS" style sheets, which publishers can use to enhance the display of their Blog.
So what is a "Blog"
This is the short term for "Web Log" which is simply an online journal.
It is usually possible to subcsribe to a Blog and have it delivered by email to your desktop, mobile phone or PDA device, as well as being available for viewing in web browsers on websites.
Blogs can be published by anyone with access to the internet, either by private individuals or by commercial websites, and it is usually easy to subscribe to a feed by following the links on the RSS symbol.
RSS Readers
Most browers these days are capable of displaying XML Feeds, but as usual on the web nothing is standard and in the same way that different operating systems have different web browers, so there are a number of RSS readers enabling users to consume RSS Feeds independantly from their browers, although for most users their browser will suffice.
RSS Aggregators
There are many RSS Feeds which have "aggregated" different blog stories together, usually by selecting content based on the category and title of the article, which are re-distributed as a new RSS Feed
Why start your own Blog?
Maybe you have something to say and want to share it, or maybe just for fun. Or perhaps you want to use it as a marketing tool for your website...
